Cecil GIBSON was born on May 1, 1884, at Middlesex, England.
On June 12, 1915, he enlisted in the 47th Battalion (British Columbia), CEF and served on the battle fields in France.
On May 9, 1917, he was wounded in action.
On August 15, 1917, he was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in the field at the Battle for Hill 70.
On February 28, 1918, he was awarded a Bar to the Military Medal for gallantry in the field.
On April 23, 1918, he was awarded the ‘Distinguished Conduct Medal’ for:
“Gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a patrol sent to establish contact with the left Division. He had to travel nearly a mile over unknown country under heavy shelling and cross a swamp that was considered impassable. He brought back valuable information and in addition, did good work on protective patrols and in guiding in reinforcements.” [London Gazette]
He was deemed unfit for further service due to physical and mental disabilities. He was honourably discharged on January 8, 1919.
Cecil GIBSON died on February 4, 1959.
He was a prominent founding member of Matsqui Unit #315.
