Private George JOHNSON
No. K47802 Westminster Regiment (Motor)
Canadian Army
My name is George Stanfield JOHNSON. I was born on March 23, 1912, at London, England.
During the Boer War, my father served in medical surgery and my mother a nurse, in Malta. They had three children.
On November 11, 1918, my brother Frederick, who served with the Royal Artillery, was killed at ‘Hellfire Corner’, a busy and dangerous junction near Ypres in Belgium. Hellfire Corner was a transport hub, which ran from Ypres to the frontline trenches. Situated in a particularly exposed area, it was under constant observation by the Germans and within easy range of their guns. Anything moving along the roads here had to run the gauntlet of shellfire. It became notorious as ‘the most dangerous corner on Earth’.
In 1940, I enlisted with the Westminster Regiment (“Westies”) as a motor mechanic. The new universal carriers (“Bren Gun Carrier”) were a headache for us mechanics due to poor quality control and acts of sabotage by factory workers.
My Regiment served from 1939 to 1946, during World War II. The Regiment was engaged in fighting in North Africa, Italy and Holland against the Axis Forces.
