John CARTER was born on February 24, 1922, at Edmonton, Alberta.
On June 27, 1940, he enlisted with the Irish Fusiliers (Vancouver Regiment), CASF, as a rifleman and posted to the United Kingdom (UK). He later transferred to the Calgary Highlanders.
On July 4, 1944, the Normandy Campaign[1] ended and the liberation of Nazi occupied Europe began. John was sent from the UK to fight in France and the Netherlands.
On July 24, 1944, John suffered a shrapnel wound to the knee during ‘Operation Spring’ at St. Andre-Sur-Orne, France.
On September 22, 1944, he suffered a bullet wound to his right arm.
On October 18, 1944, he suffered a bullet wound to his right knee, while fighting in the Netherlands.
John’s father, Frederick CARTER (prominent Chartered member, Matsqui Unit #315), had served during the 2nd South African (Boer) War and WW1.
John was a past-president of Matsqui Unit #315.
John CARTER died on October 23, 1995. He is buried at the Mt. Lehman Cemetery, BC.
