Sergeant GILLIS, Murdock (DCM)

Murdock GILLIS was born on May 24, 1878, in Queen’s County, Prince Edward Island.

On August 27, 1915, Pte. GILLIS, was an original member of the 3rd Reinforcing Draft for the 43rd Battalion, CEF.

On February 28, 1917, he was wounded twice at Vimy Ridge, from penetrating gunshot wounds to the chest. He was listed in hospital as “Dangerously ill.”

On March 11, 1920, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM):

“For conspicuous gallantry from April, 1915 to the end of operations, especially during operations west of the Sensee Canal in October, 1918, when he showed remarkable ability in the successful command of his platoon.  At one time, when a gap occurred during the advance, he formed a defensive flank, and established touch with the adjoining unit.”  [London Gazette]

Murdock GILLIS died on May 28, 1933 (56), from war related injuries/illness.  He is buried in the Mt. Lehman Cemetery.

He was a prominent founding member of Matsqui Unit #315.
