Corporal Daniel JOHNSON
1 Military Police Platoon
Canadian Armed Forces
Daniel Andrew Johnson (Matsqui Unit #315 member) was born in Edmonton, AB.
On February 2, 1982, he enlisted with the Military Police, where he graduated from the Canadian Forces School of Intelligence and Security, at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden, ON.
In 1982, Dan was posted to CFB Calgary, where he served with the 1 MP PL Field Section under the command and training of Warrant Officer James EDWARD, a key leader for the Canadian Embassy in Iran during the US Embassy Tehran Hostage Crisis. In 1988, he took a volunteer release after completing a five-year term and moved to British Columbia.
In 1989, Dan returned to military service and was posted to CFB Chilliwack, BC, where he later became a Military Police Shift Commander.
On May 9, 1990, Dan was tasked to provide security at the N’ATO Nuclear Planning Group (NPG) Ministerial’ meeting at Kananaskis, AB. He was in command of a MP security shift for USA delegates: Secretary of State, Dick CHENEY and Chairman of the Joints Chief of Defence, General Colin POWELL.
In 1995, after completing a second five-year term, he sought another volunteer release from the service.
As a consequence of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, he returned to military service as the .Military Security Advisor., for mainland BC Reserve units. In October 2002, he was injured in a military recreational accident and deemed medically unfit for military service.
In 2002, he joined a Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL). He served on the Branch executive committee, at the request of Branch WW2 veterans, who suspected corruption within the organization. Dan’s investigation and report (2004) exposed evidence of systemic corruption. Today, the investigation report continues to be used by both Canadian and American Legions on the indicators of fraud.
In 2006, he successfully argued with Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) that disabled veterans face additional barriers to civilian employment; therefore, needed higher education. As a result, a precedent was established for VAC to assist with educational financing for disabled veterans pursuing degrees.
Dan graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) with a Bachelor Technology degree in Forensic Investigation (Economic Crime), where he developed a fraud prevention project for the RCL. BC Command of the RCL, turned down the project stating it would expose too much corruption.
He pursued a career as a Provincial Special Police Constable and Certified Fraud Examiner, with the BC Financial Institutions Committee and WorkSafeBC (Workers’ Compensation Board)..
In September 2023, Dan was appointed ‘Curator’ for the Matsqui Unit #315 ‘Legacy of Service’ museum.
